  • Objectives
    The program features the study of Great Books by focusing on original sources in small seminars. Students follow an integrated, multidisciplinary program that covers the major areas of human knowledge: history, the humanities, art, music, social sciences and scientific thought. The Liberal Arts College encourages students to transcend rigid categories and respond flexibly and intelligently to a wide variety of situations. Courses also stress writing and research skills and the use of a second language.

    A high level of performance is required to be admitted to, and to remain in, the Honours program.

        * 18 required credits in Structure and Dynamics of Western Civilization I, Modes of Expression and Interpretation I, History of Art
        * 21 required credits in Structure and Dynamics of Western Civilization II, Modes of Expression and Interpretation II, History of Music, the Sciences and Society and Liberal Arts College Special Studies: Antiquity to Renaissance/Reformation
        * 15 required credits in the Twentieth Century: Forms, Themes, Critiques, Liberal Arts College Special Studies: Seventeenth Century to the Present, Liberal Arts College Honours Essay Seminar
        * 6 elective credits chosen in consultation with the Honours adviser
        * 30 elective credits in any department

    Major in Western Society and Culture
    : 42 credits

    Students completing the core curriculum of 42 credits are strongly encouraged to graduate with a Major in Western Society and Culture. The College advises students enrolled in the BA Major in Western Society and Culture to take, in addition, some form of concentrated study, e.g. Major or Minor, within a single department or field of study.

        * 18 required credits in Structure and Dynamics of Western Civilization II, Modes of Expression and Interpretation II, History of Music and the Science and Society

        * 48 elective credits in any department which may take the form of a Major or a Minor in another discipline
