  • Objectives The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician program will provide you with the academic studies and the practical experiences through which you will see a building as a system. Opportunities will be provided to develop and demonstrate skills in welding, sheet metal, electrical, plumbing, heating, refrigeration and air conditioning trades. As a heating, refrigeration and air conditioning technician, you will be involved in many stages of design, testing, manufacturing, installation and servicing of mechanical, heating and cooling equipment.
  • Entry requirements With a combination of lab work and theory, this program is recommended for those who are interested in an apprenticeship with a mechanical, heating and cooling contractor or a position in the sales and service sector providing technical support.

    BUSI-1005 -  Introduction to Business Processes

    The purpose of this course is to explore the various functional areas of business in Canada and to demonstrate the interrelationship among these areas. Students are introduced to many concepts, including major business trends, the role of government in business, marketing, operations, employee-management issues, financial resources management, business ethics, social responsibility and community-related philanthropy.

    This course introduces the concepts of computerassisted design for Heating, Venting, and AirConditioning applications.

    ELEC-1014 -  Electricity - Introduction
    This introductory course provides a foundation on which electrical troubleshooting techniques can be built. Proficiency in electrical troubleshooting techniques enables technicians to correctly diagnose electrical problems associated with heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment. Combining theory and practical work, this course describes basic electrical theory and concepts, electrical hazards, safe working practices and procedures, electrical testing equipment and applicable Codes.

    ELEC-1015 -  Basic Electricity

    We must understand how electrical power is supplied and accessed, as well as the various methods and devices used to ensure that the electricity is distributed safely. This course describes amperage service, ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI), electrical bonding to gas piping, single-phase and three-phase power supply, electrical hardware, the types and ratings of fuses and breakers and the types and gauges of wire, as well as thermocouple and powerpile DC millivolt systems. There is considerable focus on appliance wiring and schematic diagram design and interpretation. Utilizing furnace simulation boards and gas-fired furnaces, students will design and draw schematic and wiring diagrams for natural draft, fan assisted and high efficiency furnaces, then wire and troubleshoot operational faults.

    HLTH-1014 -  Health and Safety
    At the completion of this course the student will be thoroughly knowledgeable of hazards and safety procedures that relate to working conditions as well as the safe handling and procedure for materials they will be using. They will also learn skills and practice dealing with customers in various situations.

    MACH-1018 -  Basic Gas Technician
    This course focuses on common fasteners, hand, and power tools used in the HRAC field. This course also looks at the origin and identifies the properties of natural gas and propane, characteristics of complete and incomplete combustion, upper and lower explosive limits, potential sources of ignition and carbon monoxide and other by-products of incomplete combustion. In this course there is a major focus on natural gas and propane installation Codes and Code adoption documents, Ontario regulations, and standards associated with the manufacturing, testing, installation, and servicing of natural gas and propane appliances, components, and equipment.

    MACH-1019 -  Introduction to Gas Appliances
    It is essential for HRAC technicians to reference and interpret information from appliance manufacturer's installation and service manuals, service bulletins, and safety directives. This course familiarizes you with important sections of a gas appliance manufacturer's installation and service manual and looks at the association between the manufacturer's installation instructions and the Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code. Electrical drawings, mechanical drawings, and the purpose of various charts, graphs and tables are studied. The course also covers the operating characteristics, features, and methods of heat transfer of natural gas and propane appliances, explains the purpose of venting gas appliances and the different types of gas venting material.

    MACH-1020 -  Propane and Natural Gas Piping Systems
    Piping, tubing, hose, and fittings used with natural gas and propane must be installed and tested in accordance with Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code. This course covers the Interpretation of the Gas Codes as it applies to piping and tubing systems. With a combination of theory and hands-on shop classes, students learn to identify piping, tubing, and fittings, pressure-testing requirements, purging requirements, pipe system sizing, and the requirements for the installation of polyethylene pipe and fittings, for water, vent, and underground gas service.

    MACH-1026 -  Press Regulators/Meters, Fuel Containers
    The need and types of meters, fuel containers and pressure regulators, codes and regulations pertaining to them.

    MECH-1080 -  Refrigeration & Air Conditioning-Theory

    The study of the refrigeration cycle theoreticaland actual compression cycle.

    MECH-1081 -  Appliance Venting
    Operational and categorization of gas firedappliances and system components to match ventingrequirements.

    MECH-1082 -  The Building as a System

    Gas technicians must be thoroughly familiar withprevailing construction methods and technologiesthat support the concept of a building as a seriesof interdependent parts air distribution systemsbalancing and code requirements.

    Principle of operation and components andservicing of absorption refrigeration.

    MECH-1084 -  Water Heaters & Hydronic Heating Systems

    Installation, types and servicing of gas firedboilers.

    MECH-1085 -  Air Conditioning Lab Applications

    Types of compressor and starting mechanisms,operation and application.

    MECH-1086 -  Forced Warm Air Heat/Conv/Add-Ons

    Installation, selection, identification andservicing of forced warm air heating systems.Accessories added to forced air systems functionand operation.

    MECH-1087 -  Air Handling
    Properties and safe handling of air systems, typesand purpose of venting.

    MECH-1088 -  Refrigeration Lab Applications

    Methods of refrigerant and simple system control.

    MECH-5018 -  Piping & Tubing Systems-Adv

    This course explains Gas Code requirements for industrial and commercial propane and natural gas piping systems for gas pressure systems exceeding 2 psig. Piping layout, drawings, symbols, joining methods, identification of underground piping, and pressure testing are studied. Welding safety, certification and procedures are also covered.

    PSYC-1025 -  Human Relations 1
    This course is designed to assist the student in developing a greater understanding of the basic social and psychological principles of human behaviour. Emphasis will be on the cultural elements of interpersonal behaviour, socialization and personality development, the self-concept, perception, verbal, nonverbal and listening skills. As a result, the successful student will acquire practical life skills, essential for both personal and career development.

    SHMT-1018 -  Sheet Metal Fabrication 1

    Introduction to basic sheet metal layout andfabrication to be able to complete a changeover ina heating system.

    SHMT-3009 -  Sheet Metal Fabrication 2

    An intermediate course in sheet metal layout andfabrication.

    WELD-1013 -  Welding Technology/Fabricating Skills
    The student will be able to operate oxy-acetylene equipment to perform cutting and welding operations. Basic M.I.G. welding skills will be taught to perform welds as well as metal fabricating skills.
