  • Objectives
    The Certificate in Modern Languages is a 30-credit certificate drawn from a mix of courses in Modern Languages and other departments. It provides you with a highly professional and yet practical approach to the study of the languages of your choice. It offers you exposure to studies in your chosen language of speciality while at the same time directing you to studies in other disciplines such as Anthropology, Communications, Geography, History and Philosophy. This creates a synthesis of interest that benefits you in your future academic or professional career.

    Languages available are: Spanish, French, Chinese, German and Japanese.

    The requirements of the Certificate (30 credits) will include:

        * Four core courses (twelve credits) in the same language, e.g.

              MODL 1131, MODL 1132, MODL 2231, MODL 2232
              In French upper level courses could be taken instead, e.g.

              MODL 1111, MODL 1112, MODL 2211, MODL 2212

        * Two MODL language courses (six credits) in another language
        * Three courses (9 credits) of the following:

    • ANTH 1100     Introduction to Social and Cultural Anthropology
    • CMNS 1104 or     Foundations of Intercultural Communication
    • CMNS 1217     Multicultural Interpersonal Workplace Communication
    • ENGL 1101 or     Canadian Literature
    • ENGL 1102     Major Themes in Literature (designated sections for Intercultural and International Studies)
    • ECON 1103     Globalization and the World Economy
    • Any HIST course     
    • HUMS 1171 or     World Religions – Oriental
    • HUMS 1172     World Religions - Occidental
    • IDST 1103     Introduction to Intercultural/International Studies
    • Any other MODL (up to six credits)     
    • PHIL 1135 or     Asian Philosophy
    • PHIL 1170     Philosophy and Religion
    • POLI 1103     Introduction to World Politics
    • One elective (3 credits), no MODL
