    ARTS-1002 -  Perceptual Studies
    Using the model, still life, objects, materials, the environment and the studio space, the student will learn to see and evaluate the visual world and, through analysis, interpret visual impressions into two-dimensional form through the use of pencil, paint, ink, conte, crayon, chalk and collage.

    ARTS-1005 -  Painting 1
    A course is designed to introduce students to a wide variety of painting techniques including colour and compositional skills.

    ARTS-1006 -  Sculpture 1
    This course is designed to introduce students to 3D thinking through a wide variety of materials, techniques and experiences. Students will be introduced to machine shop practice and safety. Emphasis will be placed on developing manual skills, a sensitivity toward materials and their application, as well as on conceptual skills.

    ARTS-1007 -  2D & 3D Design
    2D and 3D design is a studio course intended to prepare students for study in a wide variety of art and design principles. In this course formal, communicative and conceptual aspects of design are covered through projects, in-class assignments and discussions. Students are presented with design problems and are challenged to devise their own solutions in both 2 and 3 dimensions, in a variety of media. In addition to the study of design, students are provided the opportunity to learn good studio practices. Problem-solving skills, willingness to research, craftsmanship, and professionalism are all important to success in this course

    ARTS-1009 -  Perceptual Studies

    ARTS-1010 -  Painting 2

    Techniques, colour studies, compositional skills and processes in painting are further developed.

    ARTS-1011 -  Sculpture 2
    A continuation of Sculpture 1 this course encourages the further development of understanding sculpture through studio practice. Problem solving in three dimensions and issues including perception, metaphor, communication and composition will be discussed and explored through projects, discussions and presentations

    ARTS-1015 -  Introduction to Photography

    This course is structured to provide a balance between technical instructionand demonstrations, out-of-class shooting assignments, in-class darkroom work, discussion of ideas and concepts related to the history of Fine Art photographic images and processes. A critical analysis of student's work and its connection to painting, sculpture, installation art etc. will be ongoing.

    ARTS-1054 -  Intermedia

    This one semester course is designed to introduce students to the inter- disciplinary aspects of contemporary art. The course will provide students with an introduction to work in video. Individual and class projects will be structured around various techniques and methods of working, including photomontage, sound and performance.

    ARTS-1071 -  Methods & Media in Drawing

    In this course student will investigate methods and materials such as watercolour, pencil, ink, acrylic paints and collage. Emphasis will be placed on constructing composition, design principles and directed studies of tone, balance and proportion. Subject matter and visual resources will consist of studies from the object, figure, the constructed/natural landscape and pattern.

    ARTS-3003 -  Visual Research
    The course is experimental and open-ended, and includes analytical drawing to discover new ways of seeing, including the examination of every day objects in changing situations. Perception and the principles of looking in a larger context will be explored through application and experimentation using a wide range of materials.

    ARTS-3004 -  Three Dimensional

    This course extends the first year's sculpture investigations with an emphasis placed on acquiring a working knowledge of a number of new materials and processes. The acquired information will be applied in a number of three-dimensional projects. A higher level of conceptualization is expected.

    ARTS-3005 -  Canadian Art
    A survey of Canadian Art History from early colonial to the present day, including native work, current painting, sculpture and avant-garde work.

    ARTS-3006 -  Printmaking 1

    This course will examine traditional methods of printmaking in a contemporary art context. Many variations of relief and intaglio printing techniques will be explored to a high degree of experimentation and resolution. Technical competence and conceptualization will be expected from the student.

    ARTS-3009 -  Visual Research

    The course continues to discover new ways of seeing. Perception and the principles of looking in a larger context will be explored through application and experimentation using a wide range of materials. Major works in painting will be accomplished.

    ARTS-3010 -  Three Dimensional
    This course extends the visual investigations begun in Three Dimensional with an emphasis placed on acquiring a working knowledge of a number of different materials and processes. Through several projects, students will further develop conceptual skills and expand the notions of sculpture.

    ARTS-3011 -  Cubism to Abstract Expressionism

    Analysis of Western Art in the first half of the twentieth century. Emphasis will be placed on the major movements of this period.

    ARTS-3012 -  Printmaking 2
    This course functions an ntroduction to contemporary and traditional processes of printmaking techniques. Students will focus primarily on the Serigraph printing technique and its relationship to Digital Imaging. This intensive course is designed to facilitate a comprehensive and systematic exploration of the connection between traditional and contemporary printing methods. A high degree of technical competence and conceptualization will be expected from the student.

    ARTS-3034 -  Fine Art Studio 3

    This second year course builds on the insights and information obtained in the first year, placing more emphasis on concepts and processes. The course takes the form of a series of projects each specifically dealing with one aspect of art, e.g., process, installations, painting, narrative.

    ARTS-3035 -  Fine Art Studio 4
    This course builds on the insights and information obtained in the third semester, placing more emphasis on concepts and processes. The course takes the form of a series of projects. Emphasis is placed on development of content and direction. Each project deals with a specific content using a variety of processes e.g. drawing, performance, installation, photography. Project content subjects are quite varied e.g. culture events, family, dreams, childhood memories.

    ARTS-5006 -  Information for Artists

    A course that is designed to assist graduating students meet their objectives as practicing artists. The series of lectures are designed to provide information relevant to the pursuits of becoming a professional artist. This course is a co-requisite for Fine Art Studio 6.

    ARTS-5019 -  Fine Art Studio 6

    Students continue into a program of semi-independent research in a variety of media, as defined and developed by the faculty and students using a semi-tutorial method and group critiques. The emphasis is towards ongoing exhibitions and graduation exhibition. This course includes practical experience on business aspects of art: e.g. designing and printing a catalogue, documenting work, making professional presentations, organizing, selecting and hanging exhibitions. Graduating students are required to participate in a group public exhibition. If a student is missing a course or courses and will not be graduating, he or she may not be allowed to be in this event. This course is a co-requisite for ARTS5006.

    ARTS-5027 -  Pop Art to Post Modern
    An intensive survey of the characteristic elements of contemporary art in the post-second world war western world. Emphasis will be placed on individuals representing different viewpoints in such movements as Neo Dada, Pop, Minimal, Conceptual, Environmental and Post-Modernism.

    ARTS-5028 -  Fine Arts Studio 5

    COMM-3024 -  Professional Communication-Visual Design

    This course explores the relationship between visual, verbal and written experience and introduces students to the analysis and writing of texts in art and photography related contexts. Students will encounter a "continuum" of writing by and about artists, photographers, and their work ranging from the creative to the analytical and practical. By following a sequence of reading and writing assignments, all dealing with aspects of art, artists, photography and photographers, students will develop an appreciation of the value of written communication. Students will develop analytical skills and practice those skills through reading quizzes, writing objective and descriptive descriptions, critiques/reviews, analytical essays and presenting information.

    HIST-1032 -  Ancient Origins to the French Revolution

    This course introduces students to the history of Western art and architecture by examining key works within the intellectual and social context that they were created. Because art does not develop in a vacuum, the philosophical, religious, scientific, etc., background of each period will be examined in order to gain a fuller understanding of important artistic trends. The overall goal of this course is to provide a working knowledge of the history of Western art and architecture as well as a foundation for critical thinking about art's history.

    HIST-3016 -  French Revolution to First World War
    This course will introduce the student to the chronological development of painting, sculpture and architecture in the west from the origins of the Modern state and the Industrial Revolution up to the First World War. This course will provide a broad survey of the history of art. It will give the students a basic sense of the breadth and depth of historical development and the sequence of history (Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism and Post Impressionism).

    WRIT-1036 -  Reason & Writing 1-Art & Design
    This course will introduce art and design students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking. This course will also introduce students to selected topics and concepts in art and design.
