Women's Studies and Gender Relations Certificate

  • Objectives John Abbott College’s Women’s Studies and Gender Relations Certificate provides a comprehensive study of gender issues and women’s experiences placed within psychological, social, cultural and historical contexts.

  • Course description To obtain a certificate in Women’s Studies and Gender Relations, students must complete a minimum of six courses chosen with at least three taken from the “A” Stream and the rest from the “B” Stream (see course listings).

    “A” Stream courses


    These courses focus primarily on the study of women, gender relations and gender issues in particular disciplines. Students must choose at least one “A” Stream course given by any of the following teachers: Helen Binik, Marcia Kovitz, Renee Lallier, Patricia Gordon or Vivianne Silver.

    “B” Stream courses

    "B" Stream courses, which include some focus on gender issues, offer the opportunity for Women’s Studies and Gender Relations students to complete a paper or project worth at least 25% of the final grade. (Students must consult with the teacher in order to choose an appropriate assignment.) Research or methodology courses, which examine gender issues or bias in traditional studies and research subjects also allow for this grade option. Women’s Studies and Gender Relations students should notify their teachers of both their “A” and “B” Stream courses and also advise the Coordinator of their current standing at the beginning of each semester.
