IV Therapy - Registered Practical Nurse Ontario College Graduate Certificate
ObjectivesThis program will provide the RN/RPN with in-depth knowledge and skills in all aspects of intravenous therapy. The curriculum involves a self-paced introductory module to review pertinent anatomy and physiology. This is followed by core courses and elective courses which introduce the fundamental concepts of intravenous therapy and related applications. These courses are divided for the RN/RPN based on the College of Nurses' Standards.
Course descriptionPNUR8010 Anatomy And Physiology For Intravenous Therapy RPN
Description: Admission: Certificate of Registration - RPN and other allied health professionals with the permission of the co-ordinator. This independent learning course is designed to enable all students to review the main components of anatomy and physiology relating to Intravenous Therapy. This course focuses on normal cellular homeostasis including maintenance of fluid, electrolytes and acid-base balance. These topics, as well as the anatomy and physiology of the vascular and renal systems provide the basis for subsequent program courses.

PNUR8020 Intravenous Therapy Lab For Registered Practical Nurses
Description: Admission: Certificate of Registration - RPN and other allied health professionals with the permission of the co-ordinator. Student must be registered in the Intravenous Therapy Program for RPN's. Participants will be able to become familiar with IV equipment, changing bags, maintaining an IV and calculating drip rates. The importance and use of different delivery systems and types of IV fluids will be emphasized. The role of the RPN and IV therapy will also be discussed.

PNUR8100 Introduction To Intravenous Therapy RPN
Description: Admission: Current Certificate of Registration - RPN and other allied health professionals with the permission of the co-ordinator. Recommended: Anatomy & Physiology for I.V. Therapy. Advances in technology have altered and expanded the use of intravenous therapy, both in the hospital and in the community. This course provides the students with the basic knowledge of legal responsibilities of administering IV therapy.

PNUR8200 Total Parenteral Nutrition RPN
Description: Admission: Current Certificate of Registration - RPN and other allied health professionals with the permission of the co-ordinator. This course presents the principles of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and the general guidelines for nursing practice. Both the central and peripheral methods of parenteral nutrition are discussed including risk management and quality assurance as they are applied to hospital and home care situations.

NURS8290 Chemotherapy
Description: Admission: Current Certificate of Registration - RN/RPN and other allied health professionals with the permission of the co-ordinator. Cytotoxic drugs are recognized as primary treatment for malignant disease. Knowledge of the treatment goals, modes of action of chemotherapeutic agents, principles of tumour growth and cell kill, and administration protocol are all essential for the safe and effective use of these drugs.

NURS8295 Patient Controlled Analgesia
Description: Admission: Current Certificate of Registration RN/RPN and other allied health professionals with the permission of the co-ordinator. This seminar is designed to provide the participant with an understanding of the rationale and use of the patient-controlled analgesia. The success of the system depends on competent nursing assessment of pain, client selection, monitoring for safe and effective use of the device and client/family teaching. These topics will be discussed and the neurophysiology of pain will be reviewed in this seminar.

NURS8310 Starting Intravenous Lines
Description: Admission: Current Certificate of Registration - RN/RPN and other allied health professionals with the permission of the co-ordinator. This course may not provide sufficient clinical preparation to meet the requirements of all agencies. This workshop involves guidelines for vein selection, a review of venipuncture devices, infection control and some practical experience in insertion techniques. Both pre and post insertion client teaching will be reviewed as well as the minimal documentation which is required to accompany this skill.

NURS8320 Home Intravenous Therapy
Description: Admission: Current Certificate of Registration RN/RPN and other allied health professionals with the permission of the co-ordinator. This course targets the practitioner who deals with IV Therapy in the home. The rationale, care of, indications and health teaching of various types of IV Therapy will be emphasized. The topics will include hydration, chemotherapy, pain management, and drug therapy.

NURS8485 Skills Update: Venipuncture
Description: Admission: Certificate of Registration - RN/RPN and other allied health professionals with the permission of the co-ordinator. Recommended: RPNs only - must have taken Aseptic Procedures within their training. This seminar is designed to provide the learner with an understanding of the fundamental concepts of venipuncture. Anatomy and physiology specific to the skill will be reviewed as will injection control. Client preparation equipment, documentation and critical elements of the procedure will be discussed. Lab time will be provided to allow for practical experience.
