  • Objectives
    The Motive Power Technician (Diesel) program is designed to develop graduates with essential advanced technical, organizational, interpersonal, administrative and managerial skills required for the heavy duty service industry as well as providing progressive and comprehensive learning experiences on internal combustion compression ignition power trains and related modern heavy duty systems. Students will learn to communicate effectively, diagnose and solve problems logically and to undertake responsible work tasks with a minimum of supervision.

    COMM-3040 -  Communications-Motive Power

    This course introduces students to forms of technical writing commonly found in the motive power workplace. Students will learn to research, write, and format documents according to industry standards. As well, students will learn to edit and take responsibility for the content of their own work.

    MATH-1162 -  Applied Mathematics

    This course will provide students with the necessary mathematical knowledge and skills required to understand, interpret and find solutions for analytical problems in the motive power industry.

    MGMT-1198 -  Management-Intro

    In this course, students study topics which include skills needed for work, learning and life. Students discuss the rationale that provides the foundation for learning all other skills which enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change. This course will also provide the student with an introduction to organizational structures, behaviour, business practices and procedures of the motive power service industry. Students also study topics which include, workplace safety, workplace hazardous materials information, safe work practices.

    MGMT-5041 -  Management Principles

    This course is designed to give students a basic understanding of the principles of leadership andmanagement. A central concept of the course is that there is a general framework forunderstanding leadership and management principles that applies to all organizations--large or small, public or private, product-oriented or service-oriented. The student will gain knowledge of the importance of values and ethics, communicating, planning, decision making, organizing, leading, controlling, and innovating.At the end of this course, students may use the knowledge gained to formulate and presentrealistic, comprehensive plans to resolve issues.

    MGMT-5043 -  Applied Management Principles

    The student will gain a working knowledge of, shop management, accounting practices and applied business practice skills requirements for personnel employed in various areas of responsibility in theMotive Power Industry. Effectiveness and quality improvement strategies and analyses of the respective systems and controls are emphasized.

    MKTG-1047 -  Marketing Principles

    This course is designed to give students a basic understanding of the scope of marketing research. The course follows the logic of the marketing research process. The student will gain knowledge of the importance of research and how the right questions help address the critical elements of opportunity evaluation, demographic targeting, analyzing and ethical decision making. At the end of this course, students will use the knowledge gained to execute and present a comprehensive marketing research study.

    MOTP-1028 -  Engine Mechanical Systems Fundamentals

    This course will provide a study of the design features, materials and operating principles of the internal combustion engine. This study will be applied to diagnosis and repair, rework and modification along with component failure and service analysis.

    MOTP-1029 -  Power Train Systems Fundamentals

    This course will provide an in-depth study of the design features, operating principles, static and dynamic test procedures of power transmission and driveline systems. The student will also learn to evaluate system problems logically, describe and perform service repair operations.

    MOTP-1030 -  Fuel & Emission Systems Fundamentals
    This course will provide a study of the design features and operating principles of selected fuel, intake and exhaust systems as they apply to internal combustion engines and will include fuel production and system related theories. This course will also include applied diagnosis and repair, re-work and modification, and failure and service analysis.

    MOTP-1031 -  Vehicle Control Systems Fundamentals

    This course will provide an in depth study of automotive suspension, steering and braking systems. The student also learns to evaluate system problems logically, prescribe and effect corrective action, and perform quality control comparative systems and service equipment efficiency tests.

    MOTP-1032 -  Electrical Systems Fundamentals

    This course pertains to a study of the design features and operating principles of electrical systems, such as cranking, charging, lighting and accessories systems and electronic systems, such as ignition and computerized fuel injection. The student also learns to solve applied problems, perform laboratory experiments, write lab reports and analyze performance tests according to manufacturers' recommendations.

    MOTP-1033 -  Technical Practices & Auxilliary Systems
    In this course, students study topics which include information on procedures related to fasteners, bearings, seals, sealants, oxy-acetylene heating and cutting, electric arc and MIG welding, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Fluid Power Systems, Cabs and Controls Systems and Truck, Trailer and Articulating Coach Combinations are also studied in this course.

    WRIT-1039 -  Reason & Writing 1-Technology

    This course will introduce technology students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking. This course will also introduce students to selected issues and terms in technology.
