ACCT8120 Tax Strategies For Financial Planners
Description: The student is provided with a financial planner’s working knowledge of the Income Tax Act. Topics covered include choice of investment through differential tax rates for business income, employment income, dividends and capital gains, retirement planning through RRSPs and pension plans, and estate planning through the tax free pass-through of insurance proceeds. The course includes a lab designed to familiarize students with income tax legislation affecting the determination of net income for tax purposes for individuals, taxable income and federal tax payable for individuals. This course includes a lab component.
BUS8140 Client Communications
Description: In this course, students will learn to construct comprehensive business reports and to develop effective presentations to communicate the results of their research. They will also learn to construct appropriate business communications that will permit them to professionally present themselves and their position.
This course will focus on communicating effectively with clients to keep them informed, help forge long term relationships, and to monitor client needs. Students will focus on the skills of active listening to ensure accurate information gathering, reduced misunderstandings, and increased rapport. Students will prepare and practice for presentations in a variety of settings including one-on-one, small groups and large audiences with a view to building confidence and professionalism.
FIN8110 Canadian Securities Course
Description: This course, offered in conjunction with CSI Global education is the requisite course for selling securities in all provinces in Canada. Topics include capital markets and financial services, the Canadian economy, financing, listing and regulation of securities, analyzing financial statements, fixed income, equity and derivatives markets, analyzing markets and securities, asset allocation and portfolio management, mutual funds and other managed products, financial planning and taxation. Students will write two CSI industry exams as part of this course. Students are required to pay a mandatory additional charge to register with CSI.
FIN8120 Insurance Fundamentals
Description: This course focuses on the insurance industry in Canada and is a preparatory course for the Life Licensing Qualification Program (LLQP) for those students wishing to be licensed to sell life and health insurance products. Emphasis is on the use of insurance products to manage risk. Topics covered include life insurance contracts, property and casualty insurance, disability insurance, group insurance, critical illness and long term care and extended insurance products as well as underwriting process, insurance needs analysis and professional conduct standards. Application of insurance to the small business market will also be covered.
FIN8130 Money and the Financial Services Industry
Description: This course offers an introduction to all aspects of the financial services industry, both domestic and international. Topics include the evolution of money, foreign exchange regimes, role of the central bank and OSFI, the Canadian banking system, insurance industry and other Canadian financial intermediaries and US and international financial institutions. A major group research project and presentation is part of the assessment for this course.
FIN8140 Conduct and Practices Handbook
Description: This course offered in conjunction with CSI Global Education is the ethics course of the securities industry and is a requirement for licensing under the IDA. Topics include Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct for the industry; including regulations and registration, dealing with clients accounts; including account opening, sales and trading, cash and margin accounts and client communication, transactions and products; including new issues, takeover bids and insider trading and the importance of ethics; including corporate and individual responsibility and ethical decision making. Participants will write a CSI industry exam as part of this course. Students are required to pay a mandatory additional charge to register with CSI.
FIN8150 Wealth Management Essentials
Description: This course, offered in conjunction with CSI Global Education focuses on financial planning and wealth management issues including understanding the client, budget and savings, insurance, residential mortgages, family law, tax, retirement and estate planning as well as investment management topics. These include an in-depth assessment of asset allocation, equity securities, debt securities, managed products and performance appraisal. Students will write two CSI industry exams as part of this course. Students are required to pay a mandatory additional charge to register with CSI.
FIN8160 Financial Planning Sales & Application
Description: This course allows the student to demonstrate the skills of selling and marketing in the financial services industry. This includes awareness of buyer behaviour, the ability to organize an effective sales presentation, the ability to develop and present an effective financial plan and demonstrate the skills and attitudes essential to the successful salesperson. Course includes a lab component designed to permit students to apply their knowledge through use of a variety of financial planning software.
FIN8170 CFP Preparation
Description: This course provides students with in-depth exposure to the various financial planning topics covered in the CFP syllabus to allow them to challenge the CFP industry exam. Topics include additional components of business and family law and insurance planning, as well as financial planning casework. Through the use of case studies, the student will be able to assess their ability to apply financial planning knowledge to real-life situations.
FIN8180 Applied Research
Description: This capstone course provides students the opportunity to integrate their learning gained throughout the programme. Students will produce a business plan that will demonstrate each student’s ability to conduct research, apply their knowledge to their industry, and to document their process and results in a succinct, businesslike report.
