  • Objectives
    This course introduces the fundamental elements of the Portuguese language within a cultural context. Emphasis is on the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Upon completion, students should be able to comprehend and respond with grammatical accuracy to spoken and written Portuguese and demonstrate cultural awareness. This course must be taken with the accompanying lab. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement general education core requirement in humanities/fine arts.

    1. Brief introduction to the study of foreign language
      1. Linguistic structure and relationship of language and culture
      2. The Portuguese alphabet and basic pronunciation of Brazilian Portuguese
      3. Introductory vocabulary of greetings, common cognates and numbers
    2. Formation of sentences in the present tense
      1. The verb “ser”
      2. Uses of the preposition “de”
      3. Nouns and Adjectives: Number and gender, agreement
      4. Useful expressions for the classroom and daily life
    3. Introduction to the full conjugation of the verb “ter” and “-ar” verbs in the present tense
      1. Uses of the verb “ter”
      2. Subject pronouns

      COURSE DESCRIPTION:

      This course provides an opportunity to enhance acquisition of the fundamental elements of the Portuguese language. Emphasis is on the progressive development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through the use of various supplementary learning media and materials. Upon completion, students should be able to comprehend and respond with grammatical accuracy to spoken and written Portuguese and demonstrate cultural awareness.

      OUTLINE OF INSTRUCTION

    8. Brief introduction to the study of foreign language
      1. Reinforce pronunciation of the Portuguese alphabet
      2. Practice listening skills of basic pronunciation of Brazilian Portuguese
      3. Introduce written exercises in connection with sounds of the alphabet and greetings, common cognates and introductions
    9. Practice the formation of sentences in the present tense
      1. Reinforce the uses of the verb “ser”
      2. Apply uses of the preposition “de”
      3. Recognize and use nouns and adjectives and the changes that occur in number and gender agreement
      4. Use in written exercises changes suffered by nouns and adjectives and notice the change orally
      5. Use expressions for the classroom and daily life in meaningful exercises
    10. Strengthening the understanding of the verb “ter” and of “-ar” verbs in the present tense
      1. Practice the uses of the verb “ter”
      2. Practice the formation of questions using interrogative pronouns
