Course description
Semester 1
# CCT1105 - 006 - Carpentry Safety & Tools
This is an introduction to the carpentry trade, with an emphasis on safe working practices, wood and other building materials, the proper use of hand tools, portable and stationary power tools and tool maintenance. The students will gain a clear understanding of wood technology, which will enable them to produce quality work.
# CCT1115 - 001 - Trade Calculation
The course will enable the student to develop skills in the fundamentals of mathematics that are applicable to the trade, the ability to perform trade calculations in S.I. and Imperial and an ability to solve trade-related problems pertaining to linear, area, and volumetric calculations.

PROGRAM OPTIONS
# CCT1125 - 008 - Woodworking
In this course, students will be taught the skills necessary to produce quality projects through theory and practical applications using basic joinery techniques from shop drawings. The course will provide students with a means of showcasing their ability by the construction of various projects ranging from a dovetailed case to typical carcase construction.
# CCT1135 - 001 - Layout & Sketching
This course will introduce the students to drafting fundamentals such as the alphabet of lines, scale and abbreviations. The student will develop the ability to produce isometric, oblique and orthographic sketches and apply the basic principles of geometry to construction layout.
OR
# CCT1225 - 008 - Layout & Framing
This course will familiarize the student with basic site and building layout requirements for foundation and footings and establish good framing practices for residential house construction. The student will undertake projects involving the erection of batterboards and stepped footings as well as the construction of intersecting roofs.
# CCT1235 - 001 - Plans, Specifications & Codes
This course will develop the student's ability to read and interpret working drwawings, schedules and specifications related to residential construction and to apply relevant provisions of the Building Code.
OR
# CCT1205 - 008 - Finishing
The focus of this course is for students to develop a knowledge of the terminology and components as well as skill in the application of various types of exterior and interior finishes. Installation techniques for windows, doors, baseboard and crown moulding will be investigated as well as preparation of the building envelope.
# CCT1215 - 001 - Residential Estimating
The course will enable the student to apply standard estimating techniques to produce quantity take-offs in established formats from residential plans and specifications. The process will include estimating for foundations, framing, finishing and some stair applications.
Semester 2
# CCT1245 - 001 - Metal Cutting & Welding
In this course, the student will develop knowledge in the general safety practices and operation of oxy-acetylene and arc welding and skill in the basic levels of cutting, brazing, and welding.
# CCT1255 - 001 - Rigging
This course is designed to reduce accidents and injuries byproviding the student in the construction industry with a general knowledge of rigging hazards and the principles of safe rigging practice.
