Cabinetmaking and Furniture Technician

  • Objectives The Cabinetmaking and Furniture Technician graduate is trained to work in the cabinetmaking and woodworking industry, producing both traditional and contemporary furniture as well as commercial cabinetry. Technicians design components using hand and power tools to build cabinetry to industry specifications. At the end of this hands-on program, graduates are equipped with skills that can earn them employment locally, nationally or internationally.

In the first level of the program, students acquire a sound knowledge of wood technology and develop skills in wood machining practices, geometric layout, and joinery. In the second level, these skills are applied to the construction of traditional and contemporary furniture. Students begin to use more advanced machining practices, computers, and CNC equipment to design and manufacture component parts. The final level of the program emphasizes production and provides practice in the construction of commercial cabinetry and millwork, kitchen cabinets, plastic laminate work, and furniture finishing. The Cabinetmaking and Furniture Technician program is supplemented by courses in mathematics, science and English as they relate to the trade.

Graduates who wish to become journey-person cabinetmakers may be eligible for advanced standing in the Cabinetmaker apprenticeship program, through the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
