Governance

      The University of Alberta is a board-governed public institution whose board members include representatives of the staff, faculty, and students, including representatives of the Students’ Union and the Graduate Students’ Association.

  North Campus (original): Located in the province’s capital of Edmonton, the campus covers about 50 city blocks with more than 90 buildings on the edge of the North Saskatchewan River Valley.


South Campus & Michener Park: Location of the Edmonton Research Station and Experimental Farms, which are home to the bulk of the university’s agricultural research in areas such as food safety and crop use for food—including nutritionally enhanced food—and crop use for industrial products, such as bio-degradable fuel sources and bio-plastics.

 
Augustana Campus
: Based an hour’s drive from Edmonton in the rural community of Camrose, the tight-knit campus offers degree programs in the liberal arts and sciences. Specializations include a signature outdoor education program, nationally competitive athletics programs, and international study opportunities.

 
Campus Saint-Jean: French-language campus with degree programs in arts, commerce, education and engineering (first year), science, nursing (bilingual, offered jointly with the Faculty of Nursing), conservation and environmental sciences (bilingual, offered jointly with the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Science), master’s programs in arts (Canadian studies) and education.

 
Enterprise Square: Creating a vibrant hub in downtown Edmonton’s historic former Bay Building, Enterprise Square is home to TEC Edmonton, the Faculty of Extension, the School of Business executive education and family business programs, a U of A Bookstore, and various administrative units, including Alumni Affairs and University of Alberta International.

 
Calgary Centre:  Although not technically a “campus,” the U of A Calgary Centre is located in the heart of downtown Calgary and houses staff from Augustana Campus, External Relations, the Faculties of Engineering and Rehabilitation Medicine, and the School of Business. It's purpose is to engage the 20,000+ Calgary-area alumni, learners, prospective students, donors and other University supporters.

Student Opportunities Students’ Union and Graduate Students’ Association
Undergraduate students and graduate students are represented in the governance process and are served by the Students’ Union and Graduate Students’ Association respectively.

Student groups

      There are more than 300 student groups active on campus for nearly every area of student interest: academic, cultural, recreational, and political. The largest, the Dance Club, has been going strong since 1957 and has 1,800 members.

Teaching Excellence

      The University of Alberta is home to Canada’s largest academic staff association with 3,644 faculty, librarians, graduate assistants, and other academic staff, with another 6,745 employees working in a supporting capacity.

     The University of Alberta leads the country with 28 professors who have received national 3M Teaching Fellowships—Canada’s highest award for undergraduate university teaching excellence.

Distinctively U of A

      The $52.2-million National Institute for Nanotechnology , a joint project between the National Research Council, the Government of Alberta, and the University of Alberta, is the heart of nanotechnology research in Canada. The 20,000-square-metre building is one of the world’s most technologically advanced research facilities.

      University of Alberta Libraries
: Ranks 13 th in size among research libraries in North America. Canada’s second-largest research library; ranks first in volumes per student with 7 million volumes; has access to more than 410,000 full-text electronic journals, and more than 600 electronic databases.

 
Timms Centre for the Arts is regarded as the finest theatre teaching facility in the country.

 
School of Public Health : The University of Alberta has Canada’s first stand-alone Faculty dedicated to public health to focus on safety, wellness, and prevention.

 
Faculty of Native Studies : Canada’s only such Faculty provides an undergraduate program specializing in the study of aboriginal experiences and issues of language, culture, land, and resources.

 
      The new Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute is the first institute of its kind in Western Canada, with a special focus on prevention and complex heart care, such as pediatric cardiac surgery and heart transplantation.

 
      Opening in 2011, the state-of-the-art Edmonton Clinic will transform patient care and health-care education. The facility will join health sciences students with educators, clinicians, and researchers in a team-oriented, one-stop health-care centre.

 
The Alberta Diabetes Institute
is a new research facility dedicated to discovering new ways to prevent, treat, and cure diabetes through multidisciplinary research and teamwork. 

The University of Alberta has a total of 47 alumni branches around the world and 215,000 alumni worldwide.
