  • Course description FLOR1010      Floral Design I
    Description: This introductory course will include post-harvest care of cut flowers, cover basic elements and principles of floral design, colour principles and basic design styles using fresh flowers. Introduction to wedding work will be covered (bows, corsages and boutonnieres) as well as introduction to dry flowers. Students will take all projects home.

    FLOR1020     Floral Design II

    Description: A continuation of Floral Design I, this course will be using the basic principles and techniques learned. The students will create multi-floral larger variations or designs, wall/door pieces and special-occasion tributes. Students will work with fresh, dried and artificial materials and can take all projects home.

    FLOR1030     Plant And Flower Identification And Care

    Description: In this course, students are introduced to plant and flower classification and identification. Students will learn the following: the botanical and common names of green plants, succulents and cactus; identification and control of pests and diseases; proper lighting; soil and moisture conditions for houseplants. Students will create a plant basket and a cactus garden suitable for gifts and customers.

    FLOR1040     Managerial And Selling Skills For The Retail Floral Industry

    Description: Emphasizing the latest selling behaviours, this subject deals with the techniques of salesmanship. Students learn how to deal with different buyers, prospecting, sales presentation as well as handling objections and closing the sale. Handling wire service orders and charge card orders will also be covered.

    FLOR1050     Retail Florist - Field Placement I

    Description: Student must be accepted in the Retail Florist program prior to registration in this course. Students will have the opportunity to apply the skills learned in the prior theory courses. Placement will be in a florist shop under the store manager.

    FLOR1060     Advanced Floral Design

    Description: This course is a continuation of Floral Design I and Floral Design II. This course will cover more complex principles and techniques not covered previously. Using fresh, dry and artificial materials, work will include advanced linear design, landscape and curve design, abstract and Ikebana styles.

    FLOR1070     Wedding Floral Design

    Description: This course is designed to cover all aspects of wedding floral arrangements in both fresh and silk flowers. Students will create church and reception arrangements, as well as bouquets and corsages. Colour schemes, wedding styles and flower selections will also be discussed.

    FLOR1080     Retail Florist - Field Placement II

    Description: Course Admission: The student must complete the theory courses as well as Retail Florist - Field Placement I prior to registering for Field Placement II. This course is a continuation of Field Placement I including the design of more advanced floral arrangements.
