Journalism - Print & Broadcast Ontario College Advanced Diploma
ObjectivesCanadore’s three-year Journalism - Print and Broadcast program prepares students to enter this fast-paced field. Students will learn to conduct background research, plan and conduct interviews, take photographs, shoot video and record audio. They will have the opportunity to do live on-air interviews for the college’s radio and television stations; they will also write editorials and do desktop layout for the college’s online newspaper. The program’s final year brings those skills together as the students prepare for a six-week work placement in the industry, where they put theory into practice in the workplace. The program’s focus is on helping the student create and expand a portfolio of work that displays skills across a number of media including radio, television, newspapers, magazines and the Internet. Professional portfolios maximize the graduate’s chance of securing a journalist’s job by proving they have a wide range of skills to meet the challenges of a demanding industry.
Practical experienceThere is a work placement aspect to this program.
Entry requirementsStudents must have excellent oral and written communication skills, some familiarity with still and video photography, and exhibit computer skills. They will also need to be creative and motivated, as well as be up-to-date and interested in current events. Having completed a Media Studies or Mass Media course is an added bonus.
