  • Objectives This part-time program is designed to provide individuals with applied skills to increase their knowledge and ability in leadership and management practices. Students will be exposed to current leadership and management theories as well as practical application to increase individual effectiveness in the workplace. In addition to a greater capacity to accept promotion or increased responsibility, graduates will have developed competencies and self-awareness for the challenges and development required to lead other individuals and/or groups.

  • Course description BUS1220      Strategic Business Planning
    Description: This course encourages students to apply the principles and knowledge obtained across all business disciplines (i.e. management, operations, marketing, and accounting). This course uses a broad strategic business perspective with a focus on applying strategic management concepts through experiential learning. Students will experience all phases of the strategic process including strategy formulation, strategy implementation and strategic control. The course uses an interactive computer simulation, plus in class exercises to allow students to appreciate the complex strategy trade-offs which managers must face. Using the simulation, students will make decisions, measure their quantitative results, and propose corrective actions or insights.

    MGMT1500     Leadership Models and Application
    Description: This course teaches the theory and practice of leadership in today's organizational structures. Emphasis will be on contemporary models with a focus on communication and understanding interpersonal and organizational dynamics. Concepts learned will be developed through case studies, role-play and experiential discussion.

    MGMT1510     Culture and Change Management

    Description: This course provides students with an understanding of the leader's role in both managing and adapting to organizational culture and transformation. A number of issues and challenges faced by organizations due to the impact of the global economy will be covered. The student will focus on the skills and competencies required by leaders to act as change agents, and how to integrate on-going change as part of the organizational culture.

    MGMT1520     Facilitating Team and Group Dynamics
    Description: In this course, the student will discover the steps needed to create and manage effective work teams, including how individual communication and personal style affect performance of others. The student will study how groups differ from teams, and how collective problem-solving and decision-making differ from methods used by individuals.

    MGMT1530     Performance and Competency Management
    Description: Competency and performance improvement remain urgent goals of most organizations. In this course, students will learn systematic approaches to improving individual performance in ways that help achieve change. The course will cover successful and unsuccessful methodologies to performance appraisal and management. The student will learn through role-play and case study, the most effective and personally comfortable process to conduct performance evaluations. Several examples of actual performance appraisals are made available in this hands-on course.

    MGMT1540     Development for Leadership Effectiveness

    Description: This course will focus on several facets of growth and improvement, including self-directed learning and responsibility for achieving progressive leadership effectiveness. Students will examine a number of components of personal competency, such as: emotional intelligence, personality/leadership styles, barriers, mentorship and organizational differences. By the conclusion of the course, students will have developed an individual career plan to set goals and address challenges for accomplishing leadership direction.
