Objectives:
Our two semester (24-week) full-time program prepares you to manage information in a hospital nursing unit. Learn about basic human needs, hospital organization, medical terminology, processing medical orders, communication skills, telephone and reception activities, and basic computer skills.
Practical experience:
This program includes a 4-week work experience course.

College Success Skills
Enhance and strengthen your skills for success for college and career. Emphasis is on personal management, study skills, and critical thinking.
Introduction to the Hospital Organization
Examine hospital departments, healthcare ethics and legalities, confidentiality, safety and professional communication with patients and co-workers.
Role Concepts in Health Care Administration
Introduces the role of the hospital unit clerk and explores the concepts of basic needs, wellness, diversity, time management, communication, and conflict resolution techniques for the workplace.
Medical Terminology
Learn the language of medical terminology and how to read and interpret common medical terms, symbols, and abbreviations. This course covers rules, roots, combining forms, and how to apply them.
Medical Terminology 2
This course continues the instruction in the language of medical terminology. It integrates word components into exploring body systems, pathological conditions, lab and diagnostoc procedures and medication/drug classifications.
Keyboarding and Document Processing for Health Care Administration
This course combines keyboarding for speed and accuracy with Microsoft computer applications required by health administrative assistants. For successful course completion, a keyboarding speed of 35 wpm is required.
Introductory Unit Coordinating Skills
Learn the fundamentals of hospital unit coordinating skills. Topics include telephone and other communication devices and inventory methods.
Hospital Information System
Provides an opportunity to learn and practice skills with a simulated hospital information system. Practice using a computerized patient database in a simulated hospital environment.
Processing Medical Orders
This course provides instruction and practice in processing medical orders in a hospital setting, including admissions transfers and discharge of patients, diagnostic tests, medications and pre- and post-operative treatments.
Business Communications for Health Care Administration
This is an introduction to the importance of correct and current business English for the workplace. It includes proofreading, spelling, grammar, number-style skills and practice of basic writing techniques and communication skills.
Basic Mathematics for Health Care Administration
This course provides instruction for basic concepts of mathematics, which are utilized in health care.
Career Preparation
Develop skills in researching job opportunities, preparation of a résumé, participation in a job interview, and development of a career portfolio. This course also includes employer-employee relationships.
Work Experience
A four-week work-experience placement, under the guidance of a workplace preceptor, provides hands-on practice in an active hospital unit. Weekly contact with the Bow Valley College instructor is provided.
